Will AI give Excel the knife?

Artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) continue to evolve at a rapid pace, I started to wonder about their potential to disrupt traditional tools like Excel and Google Sheets (and I'm not alone). While the rash of spreadsheet startups suggests a shift in how we analyze data, I believe that these advanced technologies are unlikely to completely replace established spreadsheet software. Here’s why.

1. The Versatility of Spreadsheets

Excel and Google Sheets are super useful tools that can do a ton of different things. They’re not just for simple math; they can handle complex data analysis, financial modeling, project management, even basic wedding guest lists. They’re easy to use and have a ton of features, so they’re a must-have for many professionals in different fields.

2. The Human Element

While AI and LLMs can do wonders, they’re not perfect. They can’t quite grasp the nuances that human users bring to data interpretation. Spreadsheets, on the other hand, let us use our critical thinking and contextual knowledge to make informed decisions. AI can help us out, but it can’t replace the human touch that’s often needed for effective data analysis.

3. Integration and Compatibility

Excel and Google Sheets have established themselves as the backbone of data management in many organizations. They seamlessly integrate with numerous other applications and systems, making them a central hub for data collaboration. While AI tools can enhance functionality, they often require users to adapt to new workflows. The disruption of established systems can be a significant barrier to adoption.

4. The Role of AI as an Enhancement

Rather than replacing spreadsheets, AI and LLMs are more likely to serve as enhancements. Features like predictive analytics, natural language processing, and automated data entry can streamline workflows and improve efficiency within spreadsheets. This symbiotic relationship can empower users to leverage the strengths of both AI and traditional spreadsheet tools.

5. The Learning Curve

Let's face it a new spreadsheet can be a bit daunting. People love Excel. If you’re already an Excel or Google Sheets pro, you might be hesitant to switch to something new, especially if it doesn’t offer much more, doesn't have your favorite keyboard shortcuts, and comes with a whole other set of bugs and constraints. It’s tough to break free from the comfort of what you know and the established practices of traditional spreadsheets. I mean they have an Excel World Championship for crying out loud!

6. Ubiquity Traditional Tools

Despite the rise of AI and new startups, the demand for traditional spreadsheet tools remains strong. Between Excel and Google Sheets there are roughly 1 BILLION(!) users. It's the language of business, and many businesses rely on the familiar interface and functionality of Excel and Google Sheets. Additionally, the vast number of users who have invested time in mastering these tools are unlikely to abandon them for untested alternatives. Not to mention that Google and Microsoft practically give it away.

I think traditional spreadsheets aren't going anywhere.

So, while AI and LLMs are poised to enhance data management and analysis, they are unlikely to kill Excel or Google Sheets (at least in my opinion). I think these technologies will augment the capabilities of traditional spreadsheets, making them even more powerful. The combination of human intuition and advanced AI tools will likely create a more efficient and effective approach to data handling, ensuring that established spreadsheet software remains relevant in the ever-evolving landscape of technology.
